Combined heat and power from bagasse and steam energy
Bagasse-Fired steam power plant clean and sustainable energy
Bagasse-Fired Cogeneration Power Plant Kanchanaburi Bio-Energy Co., Ltd. constructed its cogeneration power plant in 2016 and commenced commercial operations (COD) with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) in 2017. The plant utilizes bagasse, a by-product of sugar production, to generate high-pressure steam at 40 bar and 105 bar. Approximately 329,000 tons of bagasse are utilized annually. Of this amount, 23% (approximately 73,386 tons) is supplied to the Kanchanaburi Sugar Plant for use in the sugarcane milling process, while the remaining 77% (approximately 250,614 tons) is used for electricity generation.
The plant generates approximately 111 million kWh of electricity. Of this total, approximately 26% (29 million kWh) is consumed within the power plant, while 15% (17 million kWh) is supplied to the sugar plant for machinery, equipment, and other operations. The remaining 60% (approximately 67 million kWh) is supplied to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA). In addition, the steam used for power generation, after its pressure has been reduced to approximately 0.5–1.3 bar, is supplied to the sugar plant for use in the sugar boiling and crystallization process. Another by-product of the power generation process is ash, which sugarcane farmers can use as a soil amendment to improve soil quality and fertility.
Through the efficient utilization of bagasse, steam, and other by-products, the plant supports the circular use of resources and sustainable energy generation.
